Alabama Insane Hospital
-
History: Opened in 1861 in Tuscaloosa AL. It is the oldest and largest inpatient psychiatric facility. Plans for a state hospital began in 1852. Construction began in 1853 and was completed in 1859. It was the first building in Tuscaloosa with gas lighting and central heat. The hospital was eventually renamed for its first superintendent Peter Bryce. In 2009, Bryce Hospital relocated to a newly constructed facility in Tuscaloosa. The University of Alabama took over the original Bryce hospital in 2014. The buildings would house a welcome center, 2 museums focusing on mental health and the history of the university. **Between 1872 and the early 1880s, some of the patients wrote and edited their own newspaper entitled, "The Meteor". The newspapers provide some insight into the life of a progressive mental institution in the late 1800s into the 19th century.
