Welcome to HystoricMD
- a genealogy site dedicated completely to the medical field.

Soon this "intro" will vanish into the about section of this site but for now, I wanted to explain a bit of what this site was created for and have it on the front page for easy read.
To be honest, this site was created because of one womans struggle to find anything on the 19th century physicians in her family. In searching for my own family history, I quickly discovered how difficult it was to find anything on someone in the medical field -- especially the further back you went. Hospital names changed. Hospitals moved, closed down, merged or simply disappeared. Medical schools came and went. Their names changed. And if you have someone in the medical field (such as a doctor) prior to the mandatory licensing, it is almost impossible to figure out anything about that ancestors career life. Without historic maps to show long lost hospitals, medical schools or another clue to lead you down the tedious google rabbit hole, I felt like I was getting nowhere. I had so much trouble figuring out everything from what medical school they might have attended to which hospital they might have worked at. Sadly city directories only help so much especially if you arent sure what you were looking for. This set me on a path that has been a long time in the making. I believed there had to be an easier way. I wanted to have all medical references under one website -- to create a place that would offer a reference point or launching pad for anyone working on their family history.

Over time I am hoping to build a solid database with links, locations, pictures and all the odds and ends that make up our medical history. For now, it is just me, myself, and I working on this site and since I am just one person, I will do my best to get information up as quickly as possible. I can say however that there will be new data added and uploaded every Friday.
At this time, I am compiling lists of known hospitals, schools, medical journals, medical societies, doctors, and anything else I find that might be helpful for someone. You will find that each category listed above has been created either alphabetically or by state. At this time, no links or large amounts of information is listed for hospitals, societies, or medical journals - only names. As I find information about these, I hope to add it all here for your use. Hopefully this will give researchers the ability to see what school, society, or journal their family member may have belonged to, went to, and possibly allow for a solid starting point for further research.

This site is still in its infancy so I thank you kindly for your patience as I continue to build and add to this website.
